I set this collection of stories down for a while and then picked it back up. I set it down because the first few stories took the form of “brief glimpses into heartbreaking lives,” a fine mode for a story, but the plotting was a little less suspenseful than the stories in After Rain. I was hasty to sense decline. When I picked the book back up (not for any reason I can remember), I found I’d missed out on some treasures. For some reason the stories that connected with me all seem to reside at the back of the book. Read, June 2020.
